Starting NEAR: questions to explore

A starting point for understanding East Asian affairs through research and exchange with researchers.

A starting point

NEAR stands for Network for East Asian Research. With East Asia as its focus, the project seeks to understand changes in international security, politics, and diplomacy through research, questions, and exchange.

Questions to explore

How do changes in the international security environment affect the choices of East Asian countries? How do international politics and diplomacy influence regional cooperation and tensions? The Korean Peninsula is one of several topics to examine within these relationships.

Sources and conversations

Planned activities include reviewing public papers, reports, and policy documents, asking researchers for reading recommendations, and seeking their views on specific questions. Regular and occasional material sharing, written Q&A, interviews, and commissioned contributions are being considered, with scope and fees agreed in advance where work is commissioned.

Sharing responsibly

Receiving materials or answers does not itself grant permission to publish them. Attribution, quotation, translation, and publication arrangements will be agreed separately. Source arguments and personal interpretations will be distinguished. This is an introductory note about the project’s direction, not a record of completed activities or research findings.
